2004 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. But the brand name toyota doesn't click with this crowd. Neither does the present line up, starting with the echo and closing with the avalon. The scion xb is one of three all-new models wearing the new badge and can now be found in about 80 percent of the toyota showrooms in california. In february 2004, scion will expand to the south and east coast. Scion is expected to complete its national rollout in spring 2004.  the success of the scion xb depends in part on how it stands out in the market. There's no question it stands out visually. The scion xb is a box on wheels. Built by toyota to high standards of quality, durability and reliability, the scion xb feels tight and quiet, with little wind noise and no squeaks or rattles. It rides smoothly and is easy to drive with good brakes and a smooth clutch. It's no hot rod, however, so shifting into lower gears is needed for quick acceleration. Inside, it's roomy and has a nice interior with controls that are easy to operate. The driver and passengers sit upright in chair-like seats and enjoy excellent visibility. These comprise both appearance and functional items. Among the eye-candies are clear tail lamp lenses, rear bumper applique, body side graphics, led interior lighting, carbon fiber shift knob, sport pedals and instrument panel applique. Adding function are a leather-wrapped steering wheel (red or gray), front strut tower brace, fog lamps, cup holder illumination, removable roof rack, 6-cd changer, satellite radio tuner and antenna, cold-air induction system and an assortment of handling and performance goodies from toyota racing development. Accessory prices range from $49 for a shift knob to $665 for aluminum alloy wheels. walkaroundthe scion xb looks like nothing else on the road. Even the boxy 2003 honda element seems almost curvaceous next to this exercise in extreme angularity.  side body panels composed of sheets of virtually flat metal and glass join at right angles with a flat roof, a flat hood and a flat liftgate. Only the barest hint of a curve softens the front end and windshield.  tall doors open wide. Top-hinged outside door handles fit smoothly into the xb's slab-sided styling, but they're less ergonomic and less friendly to fingernails than open, full-round handles like those found, ironically, on the xb's more traditionally styled sibling, the xa. Instead of their traditional location directly in front of the driver, the instruments huddle in a slight depression centered on the top of the dash. By way of explanation, the car maker says this placement makes the instruments easier to see because they're closer to both the driver's line of sight through the windshield and the driver's eyes' focal plane. It no doubt helps that this also saves cost in a car built in both right-hand and left-hand drive versions. As for driving the car, initially, at least, encountering a blank landscape of nicely textured plastic between the spokes of the steering wheel where gauges 'ought' to be takes some acclimation. Once acclimated, the driver finds a large, black-on-white speedometer, a smallish tachometer and an even smaller fuel gauge.  the seats are more like chairs than car seats, raised somewhat above the mostly flat floor. Side bolsters on the seat back and seat bottom cushions are minimal, so entry and exit are relatively unhindered. The design of the seats indicates the xb is not intended to be a sports car. The floor-mounted shift lever falls readily to hand, as does the hand-operated emergency brake. Pedals are ergonomically placed.  the broad expanses of glass make outward visibility stellar, easing some of the stress often triggered by urban traffic and tight parking spaces.  interior quality is better than decent, especially given the xb's price point. Fit and finish are up to toyota's standards. The stereo is mounted above the air conditioning controls, where logic says it should be. The a/c settings are adjusted with basic knobs, buttons and lever. But the stereo plays to people to whom directional buttons and pda cursor pads are intuitive. The scion's interior stylists missed the boat on the dash-mounted vents. Eyeball shaped, these could have been allowed to rotate in all planes, like those on the toyota tercel. Instead, the xb's pivot only vertically.  as severe as the xb's outside is, it delivers on its promise of a roomy inside. Next to the two cars toyota expects the scion to go head to head with, the honda civic and the vw golf, the xb leads in virtually every passenger compartment measurement, and generally not by small amounts. Amazingly, the xb boasts nearly 3 inches more front-seat headroom and 7 inches more rear-seat headroom than the element, despite the element being 6 inches taller. The element tops the xb, however, offering 74. 6 cubic feet of cargo space versus the xb's 43. 4 cubic feet. And be forewarned, ordering the subwoofer speaker requires forfeiting about 2 square feet of the cargo area's floor space.  cubby space is about normal for the class. There are the usual map pockets in the doors, cupholders front and rear and so on. There's a nook in the lower half of the dash to the left of the steering column, a cranny to the right of the column and a visually symmetrical, but taller and wider, shelf-like opening above the glove box. driving impressionthe scion is a small toyota. With that comes quality design and assembly, which translates into minimal wind noise; no odd vibrations, buzzes, squeaks or rattles; and no harshness, really, at least nothing beyond what might be expected in a relatively lightweight, short-wheelbase car.  but as far as the xb's driving and handling dynamics are concerned, steering assist is about right and response to inputs is directional. Some torque steer was evident, and there's a bit of kick back over uneven trolley tracks but nothing untoward on either account. Clutch take-up is smooth, although the gear changes could have been crisper. Torque peaks at rather high engine speeds, so revving it up in lower gears is advisable for merging onto freeways. Scion xb gets 31/35 mpg on the epa city/highway test.  body lean in corners is minimal, notwithstanding the tallish glass house. It's difficult to envision the xb in a situation requiring a steadying hand from the vehicle stability control system, but it's standing by in the event it's needed. summarylooks matter, in cars more than in most material things. Thus, perhaps the most remarkable impression from driving the xb was the lack of turning heads drawn by the stand-out body style. Even so, there may be something to be said for being the first on the block to have one. The federal government calls the scion xb a small wagon. In any case, the scion xb is a toyota, indicating the potential of many years of trouble-free, squeak-free ownership. It's also aggressively priced. model lineupxb 13,680). options as testedsport package 353) includes pedal covers, shift knob and front strut tower brace; exterior package 758) includes body side graphic, rear spoiler and b-pillar and fuel filler door appliques; light package 879) includes led interior light kit, cup holder illumination, and fog lamps; carpet floor and cargo mats 120); alloy wheels 665); scion security 429); sound package 774) includes am/fm/6-disc cd changer and subwoofer. model testedscion xb 13,680). 2011 bmw 1-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Inspiration for the 1 series came from the bmw 2002 of some 40 years ago (1968-76).  the 2011 bmw 1 series comes in coupe and convertible models in two versions: the bmw 128i and the bmw 135i.  the 2011 bmw 135i benefits from an all-new inline-6 engine, here using a single turbocharger to produce 300 horsepower, and paired with the sporty 7-speed dual clutch transmission from the z4 roadster. (code-named n55, the 2011 engine replaces last year's 300-hp twin-turbo inline-6.) the 2011 bmw 135i is also available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which we found silky smooth and a pleasure to operate. Fuel economy from the 135i even edges that of the 128i, with an epa-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway for a 2011 135i coupe.  the 2011 bmw 128i coupe and convertible continue to be powered by the normally aspirated 3. 0-liter inline-6 that generates 230 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. They're available with 6-speed manual or 6-speed steptronic automatic.  an m sport package adds a sports suspension that favors handling over ride quality.  the bmw 1 series is nearly seven inches shorter overall than the 3 series. The 1 series brings bmw's highly developed rear-wheel-drive platform to compete with cars in the entry luxury coupe class that mostly use front-wheel drive.  in many ways, the 1 series is nothing more or less than a scaled-down version of the 3 series, with similar looks, similar equipment and similar performance and handling. Indeed, it uses many of the same components and systems. The 135i is a smaller, lighter package with the same engine as the 3 series for a lot less money. The bmw 1 series was launched in the u. As a 2008 model, initially only as a coupe.  we like these cars. They're comfortable, sitting in one is like sitting in a 3 series. Underway, they are sporty and agile, driver's cars, with the feel of rear-wheel drive. We found a 128i convertible is a delight and it has enough power. Most fun to drive is a 135i coupe, though we recommend against the m suspension due to the hard ride. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes standard, a 6-speed automatic is optional 1,375).  the bmw 135i coupe 36,050) includes a firmer sport suspension and high-performance brakes, m sport aero body kit, adaptive xenon headlights with washers, sunroof, gray poplar wood interior trim, and p215/40yr18 front tires leading p245/35yr18 rears. A 6-speed manual is standard. New for 2011 is an optional 7-speed dct dual clutch automated manual transmission 1,575).  the bmw 128i convertible 34,200) and bmw 135i convertible 40,350) are equipped similarly to their coupe counterparts, except they don't have folding rear seats or a sunroof, and they ride on less radical rubber. The 128i soft top comes with p205/55hr16 run-flat rubber front and rear, while the 135i convertible gets p205/50r17 run-flat tires. Both come with a fully automatic fabric folding top. The 135i convertible does not have the coupe's body kit. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes standard on both 1 series convertibles; the 6-speed automatic is optional on the 128i 1,375); the 7-speed dct is optional for 135i 1,575).  options include a sport package 1,300) for the 128i models includes the sport suspension, sport seats, shadowline exterior trim, an increased top-speed limiter, and p205/50r17 front and p225/45r17 rear run-flat tires. The coupe also gets a black headliner. The m sport package for the 135i coupe 1,300) and 135i convertible 1,200) includes the increased top-speed limiter, m sport seats, m sport steering wheel, black headliner (coupe), shadowline trim, body cladding, and 18-inch performance tires.  a premium package upgrades with leather upholstery, 8-way power front seats with lumbar adjustment, memory for the driver's seat and mirrors, bmw assist telematics service, bluetooth wireless cell phone link, auto-dimming power-folding exterior mirrors, wood interior trim, universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, compass, illuminated visor mirrors, and additional interior lights. The 128i coupe version also includes a sunroof. A convenience package includes rear park assist, keyless access and starting, steering-linked adaptive xenon headlights, and an alarm. A cold weather package 900) adds heated front seats, a trunk pass-through with a ski sack, and headlight washers.  standalone options include leather upholstery 1,450), heated front seats 500), heated steering wheel 150), navigation system 2,100), bmw assist 750) with bluetooth connectivity, sirius satellite radio 350), ipod/usb adapter 400), smartphone integration 150), steering wheel shift paddles 120), harman kardon audio 875), 8-way power front seats 995), and adaptive xenon headlights 900). Wood trim is available on the 128i 500) and can be omitted from the 135i (for no charge).  safety features that come standard on the 1 series include dual front airbags, seat-mounted front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags (coupe only), abs, electronic stability control, traction control, cornering brake control, and launch control for getting started on slippery surfaces. The brake lights include a panic-braking mode that lights up the entire lens extra bright whenever the brake pedal is stomped hard. The federally mandated tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe bmw 1 series is definitely short in the rear compared to the larger 3 series, but it looks good that way. It doesn't look cheap or cut off or bandaged. Every major part of the car, the nose, the bodyside, the roof and the rear end, blends with the rest of the car to make a shorter, narrower version of the 3 series with a different and special roofline. Some would argue, however, that the slab-like sides are bland compared to other, more sculpted bmws.  we're fond of the m aerodynamics package standard on the 135i, including the huge air intakes below the bumper, necessary for cooling the turbocharger intake air. The 128i has a cleaner, albeit more conventional, full-width opening below the bumper, divided into three parts by two angled struts. The outboard sections are then sub-divided horizontally, with a fog light at the top and a small grille underneath. The bottom edge of the opening turns up at the ends, smile-like.  at the rear, the 128i dispenses with the 135i's prominent spoiler, in favor of a more gentle lip integrated into the trunk lid. And the 128i's rear bumper is entirely body-color, lacking the black-out panel seen on the 135i. Drag coefficient actually improves, from 0. 33 to 0. 31 cd.  put the top down on the convertible models, and the flared shoulder line that's shared with the coupes seems to form a single surface that surrounds the interior, like the deck of a small boat. Just about everything inside is in the same location and looks and operates the same way.  we found the front bucket seats to be very comfortable and supportive, with big side bolsters. It includes a central control knob with a separate menu button, while other version add cd, tel, radio, nav, back and option buttons around the controller. Those extra buttons provide easier access various functions, eliminating a few steps. Both versions require some time to learn, but the system in the 1 series is a little more daunting. Having tried idrive numerous times, we're used to it and not entirely annoyed, but many drivers will find it overly complicated.  all 1 series coupes come with a 60/40 split folding rear seat than can almost triple the trunk's 10 cubic feet of s. 2010 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Retro looks, fun to drive, versatile and efficient. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel wagons that inspired its design.  based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr is similar in concept to the chrysler pt cruiser.  we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy.  the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and side cargo doors with no handles. The cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it's plainer inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage.  the hhr ss is the most fun to drive of the hhr models, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. Options for the ls include remote start, the automatic transmission 1,000), running boards, a spoiler, and a variety of other factory and dealer-installed features and accessories.  the hhr lt 19,720) adds remote start as standard (but only with the automatic transmission), an eight-way power driver's seat, driver's lumbar support, and the availability of many more optional extras, including a bright chrome appearance package.  the hhr 2lt adds the lt equipment group 1,700), which includes the 2. 4-liter engine, 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, fog lamps, running boards, fe3 sport suspension, bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, and a pioneer audio system with seven speakers and 260 watts.  the hhr ss 26,255) adds the turbocharged engine, performance handling suspension, 18-inch polished alloy wheels, ss embroidered seats, a rear spoiler, and other items. Optional on the ss is the performance package 895).  the hhr panel comes in ls 19,030) and lt 20,030) versions. Options and prices for the panel are the same as for the equivalent levels of the non-panel versions.  one interesting option for the ls and lt utility versions are solid rear quarter panels 195), which close in the rear sides and give a look somewhat between the utility and the panel models.  safety features include front airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control, and tire-pressure monitoring. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling of the chevy hhr, though the whole retro craze is getting long in the tooth. The closest comparison is the chrysler pt cruiser, another retro-styled utility vehicle with good fuel efficiency.  the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined, with flat side wheel-well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with nostalgic integrated running boards. The flush glass all around, including the windshield, is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The taillamp treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban.  front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide, enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear liftgate. The cargo doors are smooth and don't have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside.  the hhr ss sits lower than its stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for a single bright exhaust tip. Rocker moldings somewhat resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above the rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and the rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and liftgate, further differentiate the ss from the others. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides, for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Included are durable, easy-to-clean cargo surfaces, a front passenger seat that folds flat for more cargo space, a 60/40 split/fold-flat second-row seat, and a multi-position cargo package tray in the rear that provides cargo security. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear seat, split 60/40, folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat, and, since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the right, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally, a nice feature. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear liftgate is one piece and raises easily.  the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor with tie-down points to help hold things in place. The hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats of the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables.  the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. The 2. 4-liter delivers 172 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 167 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm. The torque peak figure at such a high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. Faced with a steep, slow hill, the hhr worked its way upward like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. 2010 acura tsx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The availability of a v6 for the 2010 acura tsx represents a step almost as big as the styling changes introduced with the 2009 model year. Acura's superb navigation system is the equal of anything in the class, and it displays real-time traffic with congestion re-routing and local and national weather. The top-line audio system sets a standard for the class, too, with superbly crisp surround sound. Acura's v6 is smooth and linear, and up in the higher revs makes a pleasant growl. The v-6 model is heavier by 210 pounds and takes 3 mpg off epa city and highway ratings. And it needs an extra 15 inches of space for a u-turn. The tsx v-6 gets an epa-estimated 18/27 mpg.  the tsx uses front-wheel drive, whereas true sports sedans are rear-wheel drive. That said, the tsx is one of the better-handling front-wheel-drive sedans. And in its class it's hard to beat as an everyday driver that can still be fun on a winding road. The 2. 4-liter engine is rated at 201-hp,  styling is true to acura themes, the more aggressive, buff look to emphasize stance introduced on the 2009 model.  the 2010 acura tsx competes primarily with the audi a4, bmw 3 series, and lexus is. Other competitors include the cadillac cts, infiniti g37, mercedes-benz c-class, saab 9-3, volkswagen cc, volvo s60. Other acura-approved accessories include 18-inch, 10-spoke, chrome-look or ebony-finish alloy wheels; backup sensor; wheel locks; sport bumper kit; rear bumper applique; deck lid spoiler or wing spoiler; moonroof visor; car cover; and nose mask.  safety features include a full complement of airbags for front and side curtain airbags in back. Rear outboard seats provide anchors (latch) for child safety seats. Antilock brakes let the driver steer the car during emergency stops, brake assist boosts initial brake pressure in panic stops and electronic brake-force distribution apportions brake application between front and rear to optimize stopping distance. Electronic stability assist, coupled with traction control, adjusts brake and throttle to keep the car going where it's supposed to go through evasive or avoidance maneuvers or when road conditions deteriorate. Tire pressure monitors are standard. walkaroundthere is a consistency to acura's styling that ties its current models together and the tsx is no exception. Although it stretches the mold a bit, as it should, there's still no mistaking it for anything but one of honda's luxury line.  the front end blends elements from acura's other two sedans, the sporty tl and the more serious rl, and from the mdx sport utility. The headlight housings, for instance, with their squinty lenses curling around the front fenders to reach deep into the arcs of the front wheelwells, look like a direct lift from the tl. The elongated, pentagonal silver bar topping the similarly outlined grille pulls from both the mdx grille. The gaping lower air intake is a new design cue and shaves visual mass from what might otherwise be an overpowering front bumper while adding function by funneling needed cooling air into the engine compartment and reducing front end lift. Hood sculpting defines the tsx's centerline and front fenders.  the side view departs a bit more from the family look, but keeps just enough of the cues to stay true to its design dna. This is especially evident in the side lenses of the headlight and taillight housings and the silhouette of the trailing lip of the trunk lid, all of which closely mirror the previous tsx. In much sharper relief, though, are the sculpted character lines in the door panels. These add visual bulk and combine with edgy wheel arches remindful, again, of the mdx to make a stronger statement about the car's sporty aspirations. Door handles embedded in the upper crease give the view a cleaner look.  the rear aspect, sad to say, suggests of recent toyota camrys more than of the previous tsx in its overly busy styling. A deeply cut horizontal line slices straight across the rear vertical of the trunk lid, itself looking almost concave against the gently convex vertical of earlier models. Taillights bridge the seam between trunk and fenders and the license plate recess mirrors the five-angle grille, visually pushing the trailing lip higher and seeming to add sheet metal across the lower reaches of the trunk lid. The rear bumper cups the trunk opening with unflattering sedan like bulk, which makes the hot rod-spec dual exhaust tips look a little lame.  six-cylinder models are identified only by standard 18-inch wheels, “v6” badge on the trunk, and slightly larger lower grille inlets. interiorliking the new acura tsx interior is easy. It's comfortable without being plush, sporty without being sparse. Communication between driver and car is, for the most part, open and easy and unabridged.  the front seats are supportive, with enough side bolstering for reasonably rambunctious motoring on twisty roads. The bottom cushion could be deeper, but this is a common shortcoming in many cars. The front seat passenger still gets shortchanged with no height adjustment, which leaves even taller people feeling as if they're sitting in a hole. Cabin measurements show the tsx with the least front headroom, more rear legroom than the is, and about par elsewhere.  the rear seat is more like a bench than twin buckets, and space for the lower extremities is snug; this is the typical pinch point in compact sedans. Rear head restraints adjust for height, which is a plus for its occupants, although even when at their lowest position they limit the visibility out the back window from the inside rear view mirror. The steering wheel sports push buttons and toggles controlling more than a dozen functions, not counting the horn, making it look like it would be just as comfortable in a jet fighter cockpit as in a car. The high-end audio setup does force the relocation of the cd changer down into the bowels of the center stack, where it's not as easily accessed as with the base system, which parks it at the top of the stack, but that's a minor complaint, and one that won't even show up on the technophiles' radar.  a. 2009 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Utility and efficiency with style. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. On an autocross circuit, we found the ss model handled like a sports car.  the hhr interior isn't as functional as we'd like, however, and the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather.  the 2009 hhr is unchanged in any major way over the previous model, but there are numerous detail changes and upgrades. Standard on all 2009 hhr models are xm satellite radio, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak vehicle stability control system with traction control, and roof-rail side-curtain airbags. The 2. 2-liter engine delivers more power and better fuel economy for 2009, and there is e85 flexfuel capability on the 2. 2-liter and 2. 4-liter engines. Options for the ls include remote start, the automatic transmission 1,000), running boards, a spoiler, and a variety of other factory and dealer-installed features and accessories.  the hhr lt 20,720) adds remote start as standard, an eight-way power driver's seat, driver's lumbar support, and the availability of many more optional extras, including a bright chrome appearance package, which includes 16-inch chrome alloy wheels, and the sun and fun edition, which includes sunroof and the 16-inch wheels.  the hhr 2lt adds the lt equipment group 1,700), which includes the 2. 4-liter engine, 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, fog lamps, running boards, fe3 sport suspension, bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, and a pioneer audio system with seven speakers and 260 watts.  the hhr ss 24,815) adds the turbocharged engine, performance handling suspension, 18-inch polished alloy wheels, ss embroidered seats, a rear spoiler, and other items. Optional on the ss is the performance package 895).  the hhr panel comes in ls 19,030), lt 21,030), and ss 25,135) versions. Options and prices for the panel are the same as for the equivalent levels of the non-panel versions.  safety features include front airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control, and tire-pressure monitoring. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling of the chevy hhr. The rear seat, split 60/40, folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat, and, since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the left, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally, a nice feature.

2000 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It just keeps going and going and going. introductionwhen we're all old and gray they're still going to be selling these things. Jeep cherokee is a case study in how long a solid design can remain viable, even when some of its elements have become dated. Cherokees sprouted in suburban driveways like mushrooms. Jeep sold more than 165,000 cherokees in 1999 - more than what it sold the year before. The reason: it's tough as nails and starts at less than $17,000. Se comes with wind-up windows and vinyl upholstery. Air conditioning is optional.  sport models add the new 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine along with premium cloth. Sport models come packaged with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, a tilt steering column and a rear wiper washer. Classic adds a higher level of trim and nicer cloth.  limited models come with leather upholstery and other features. And in international markets, as well. Square, tough and durable.  the cherokee was the first unitbody sport-utility vehicle, as distinct from the traditional body-on-frame approach. There are two levels of 4wd available for the cherokee, part-time command-trac and full-time selec-trac. interiorcherokee's interior shows its age and comes up a little short in the comfort department. It was hard to perceive its interior as cramped or awkward, because by the standards of the day they weren't. Times have changed, however. Suvs have become luxurious station wagons. Without a major redesign, the cherokee hasn't kept up with that trend. Newer entries place a high priority on comfort. Compared to them, the cherokee measures up as pretty snug, particularly in the rear seat.  it's also uncomfortable for the driver. Adjust as we might we were never quite able to achieve an ideal driving position. Cherokee's limited front seat travel left us sitting closer than we wanted to be, and reaching up for the wheel rim. The primary instruments are a bit small, but the secondary array is a little more comprehensive than average, including an ammeter and oil pressure gauge.  it's possible to load the cherokee with comfort and convenience features, including a good sound system with cassette and cd players, air conditioning, power driver's seat, an overhead digital info center and two digital clocks. All of this stuff makes the going more pleasant, but we'd trade most of it for better seats. In fact, we suspect some people would dismiss the cherokee as choppy on this score, and mark it down to a relatively short wheelbase. That would be true -- as far as it goes. However, this is not an explorer, a sport-utility vehicle designed for people who see this breed as trendy station wagons. The combination of good ground clearance, short wheelbase and a favorable power-to-weight ratio make this boxy little veteran a tiger in the woods. As always, we'd prefer a manual transmission.  power notwithstanding, the cherokee's optional six-cylinder engine feels a little primitive compared to most of the v6 engines offered by jeep's competitors. An inline-6 is supposed to be an ideal design for smooth operation, but jeep's version generates noticeable vibration through most of its operating range. It's also surprisingly quick with the six-cylinder engine.  lack of caution in the option shopping process can escalate its price beyond reason; $27,000 seems like a lot to spend on one of these. And at that price, even with its limitations, the jeep cherokee still stacks up as a good buy. model lineup4-door 4wd: se 19,230); sport 21,570); classic 23,040); limited 25,365)4-door 2wd: se 17,720); sport 20,060); classic 21,525); limited 23,245)2-door: 4wd se 18,195); 4wd sport 20,535); 2wd se 16,680); 2wd sport 19,025). assembled intoledo, ohio. options as testedam/fm/cd/cassette with graphic equalizer 410); infinity premium speakers 350); up country suspension group 725) includes heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks, deletes standard rear stabilizer bar, skid plate group (transfer case, fuel tank, front suspension skid plates), trak-lok differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, full-size spare tire, tow hooks. model testedcherokee sport 4wd 4-door 25,365). 2002 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This means the overall length and wheelbase can vary tremendously, the latter from 120 inches to 157. 4. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine for the base-level xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that generates 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and regular cab xlt, and standard in all others. A 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 260 horsepower is available as an option for most f-150s. All three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can be promoted to ultimate king ranch status, with leather captain's chairs, premium audio, and unique identification.  i love the supercrew, which features luxurious rear-seat accommodations that can be converted into covered cargo storage. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The top-rung lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with handsome leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  for 2002, even base-level xls are air conditioned. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models.  with colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. And this matrix includes some specialty models.  new for 2002 is the fx4 off-road package, which includes 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with exposed lug nuts, rancho-brand shocks, three skid plates, a 3. 55 axle and p265/70r17 white-outline tires. The fx4 package is available only on 4x4 models, but the package price ranges from $620-$1165 depending on trim level and body style.  the high-performance svt lightning, packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Specialized wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited production image-generator is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch wheelbase.  also available for 2002 is a new limited-edition ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine, unique styling cues and a new color option: dark shadow grey. The 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is the third truck jointly developed by ford motor company and harley-davidson motor company. (it joins two other limited-edition models: the 2000 ford harley-davidson f-150 super cab and the 2001 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car than the dodge, chevy, or gmc. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram has been redesigned for 2002, but retains a retro look that won't appeal to everyone (at least not as intensely as it appeals to its die-hard fans).  the f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when navigating in tight city traffic. Like the ram, however, its fenders seem to fill small rural roads. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  the 2002 ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew incorporates styling cues of the past with an innovative flair. The front end of the vehicle features a new upper chrome billet grille, clear-lens headlamps and clear-lens parking lamps embossed with the harley-davidson bar & shield. For 2002, a distinct rivet design surrounds the center of the 20x9-inch five-spoke chromed cast-aluminum wheels, complementing the center caps that display the harley-davidson bar & shield. Flame pin striping and chrome accessories complement the overall package. As in the past, the ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew is lowered one inch. It features a specially tuned exhaust system with a dual inlet/dual outlet muffler, ending in chrome 3 1/2-inch 'slash cut' exhaust tips. interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice place to change into and out of driver's suits when we go racing.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat luggage space. It's a great place to put cargo or big dogs. I like putting all my equipment back there when i go fly fishing. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. This is because they use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear.  up front, the 2wd pickups use a coil-spring independent suspension, while the 4x4 versions use a torsion bar front suspension.  power steering is over-assisted, to make it easier to park and maneuver in tight quarters.  we find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in. 2012 volkswagen new beetle review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It does this in a big way, with a clean-sheet redesign that makes it new again. It's the new beetle, not a new beetle.  the 2012 volkswagen beetle jumps like a bug on a skillet from its heritage. It's 7. 3 inches longer, 0. 5 inches lower, and 3. 3 inches wider than the 2010 new beetle, last one made. The stretch morphs it into a real car, not so much a cute little thing. It looks good with more dynamic proportions. It's still unmistakably vw beetle.  the coefficient of drag, 0. 37, is surprisingly good, although not near the lower (by 2 inches) honda civic, at 0. 315, or the smaller ford fiesta at 0. 33. Interior volume has grown by 5 percent, from 81 to 85 cubic feet. The roof is lower, but because it's also longer, there's a bit more rear headroom. In the front, it gains 1. 9 inches in legroom and 2. 5 inches in shoulder room, making the 2012 beetle feel less like a capsule.  the front legroom is 0. 7 inches more than that in the all-new 2012 toyota yaris, but the beetle's rear seat has just 31. 4 inches of legroom, which is 1. 9 inches less than the yaris, on a wheelbase that's 1. 1 inches longer.  the trunk of the 2012 beetle is spacious at 15. 4 cubic feet. With the rear seat folded it's nearly 30 cubic feet, and the high-swinging hatchback enables giant things to fit inside, making the beetle handy for hauling.  the seats and trim are neat but not fancy. The bucket seats are clean, simple, and comfortable, with excellent bolstering.  instrumentation is so clean it's memorable for its rarity. In the center of the big clear speedometer there's a multi-function digital display, accessed with a flick of the driver's right thumb, scrolling a small wheel on the steering wheel. It makes for safe driving!  the 2. 5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, with an iron block and double overhead cams, is carried over from the new beetle, but the horsepower increases by 20, to 170 hp. Torque increases by seven foot-pounds, to 177 foot-pounds at 4250 rpm. It's mated to a standard 5-speed manual gearbox, or optional 6-speed automatic transmission that didn't wow us. We've driven a vw golf with that 5-speed manual transmission, which is satisfying and gives the car pep from 0 to 60. We recommend the manual.  acceleration in the 2. 5l is adequate, and 75 mph on the freeway is smooth and mostly effortless. The 6-speed manual automatic transmission isn't as much fun as the manual, especially with this engine. The automatic's side-to-side semi-manual shifting using the lever at the floor was better than nothing, but not very racy.  a 2. 0-liter turbo model is also available that comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and a different rear suspension. The turbocharged engine makes 207 horsepower and 217 pound-feet of torque at a low 1700 rpm, and it gets about the same fuel mileage although on high-test gas. It's a 2. 0-liter turbodiesel with direct injection, making 236 pound-feet of torque. The engine has been used successfully for some time in the golf and jetta tdi.  the chassis is rigid and the body solid, with subframes front and rear, supporting the suspension. The rear uses a torsion beam, although the beetle turbo uses a more sophisticated multi-link, for the higher threshold of cornering. The freeway ride in the beetle doesn't suffer for the torsion beam. It's comfortable and consistent. Potholes don't hurt, but rough pavement can make the rear end of the car want to dance. lineupthere is a stripped-down beetle 18,995), but good luck finding one. It uses the 170-horsepower 2. 5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. It comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear disc brakes, power windows, cruise control, leather steering wheel, cloth seats, 50/50 split folding rear seat, trip computer, and 8-speaker sound system.  the 2012 beetle 2. 5l 19,795) adds body-colored mirrors, v-tex leatherette seating, 6-way manual seats with lumbar, heated front seats, a second glovebox, bluetooth and mdi (media device interface). A 6-speed automatic transmission is available 20,895). Options include heated front seats, three-color interior ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, and fender audio system.  the beetle is available as a panoramic sunroof model with added features such as keyless entry and touch-screen radio. It's available with manual 22,295) or automatic 23,395). The 6-speed dsg dual-clutch automatic-manual transmission 24,495) is available. The beetle turbo comes standard with bluetooth, ipod connectivity, three-color ambient lighting, larger brakes with red calipers, second glovebox, sport seating surfaces, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, foglights, three additional gauges, and alloy pedals. It makes 140 horsepower with a fat 236 pound-feet of torque, using either the 6-speed manual or 6-speed dsg. That's how the silhouette of the beetle changes, by making it 7. 3 inches longer, 3. 3 inches wider, and 0. 5 inches lower. The new shape is more dynamic and muscular; gone is the cuteness, although not the identity. Its coefficient of drag is 0. 37, a good number that still lags behind some competitors, and reveals the legacy of a round bug. The sleek 2012 honda civic, for example, comes in at 0. 315.  looking head-on at the new beetle, it's wide and chubby enough that the lines are actually horizontal. A narrow black mouth under the bumper spans the face like a pinched grin, under perky headlamps like eyes, and a hood seam that seems to define a wide nose, having one chrome nostril with vw in it.  at profile, the good-looking roofline is like a stylish tight arc, with roadster lines tracing to a 2005 concept car called the ragster, that had the look of a chopped-top hot rod.  the wheel cutouts are perfect semi-circles dropping down toward the pavement. In contrast to the smooth curves of sheetmetal everywhere else, the fender flares have squared edges, offering contrasting definition to the shape.  the beetle might be called a hatchback. The rear gate is massive. No compromises to the car's shape, for the utility of cargo loading. It's like the old bug, in a welcome way.  there's a decent amount of room inside the 2012 beetle, 85 cubic feet. Rear headroom, and front legroom and shoulder room is more than that in the new beetle, so it doesn't feel so much like a capsule. But it's not so roomy in the rear, with just 31. 4 inches of legroom, which is 1. 9 inches less than in the yaris, despite the beetle being nearly 14 inches longer. However, that excess length is mostly overhang; the beetle wheelbase is only 1. 1 inches longer than the yaris.  the 2012 beetle trunk has grown to a spacious 15. 4 cubic feet, a whopping increase of 27 percent over the new beetle; and with the 60/40 rear seat folded, there's a vast 29. 9 cubic feet behind the front seats. The rear trunk lid is like a hatchback or wide liftgate, so giant things can fit inside. With the dear old vw bug, there would have been no way, for even one of them.  there's good visibility out the front and rear, even with the low roof and high beltline. And it's a quiet ride. For example the extra glovebox, called the kaeferfach or beetle bin. For sure the simplicity of the instrument. Bucket Seats✔ Power Windows✔ Cruise Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Bluetooth✔ Alloy Wheels

2002 mercedes-benz s review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The benchmark ultra-luxury sedan. introductionthe mercedes-benz s-class has been on the road going on two years now, but the technology found in the these sedans remains the benchmark for the class. Under that understated skin lurks the heart of a robot. Mercedes was the first to offer this technology, although others are coming (infiniti q45, for one). Among the very few other 2002 changes are standard daytime running lights (sigh), and a semantics change on one climate-control button: a simple, unmistakable 'ac off' finally replaces the mysterious 'ec' (hip-hip-hooray!). It says rich, at least as much as gorgeous. A long strip of burl walnut sweeps across the instrument panel from door to door, its bend and taper reminiscent of the graceful lines of an archer's bow. There's a cavernous 40. 3 inches of legroom back there, just one inch less than the front-and the rear seat reclines, too.  'the design goal was to reduce driving stress as much as technology and good design sense would allow,' says mercedes. Yes but … watch out for the ambush by an oxymoron; technology and good design sense often fight for control. The s500 instrument panel includes about six dozen switches and controls, some of which have icons for german functions, and the translation into sign language sometimes comes out greek. The glovebox is crammed with operating manuals in black leather packets, including a separate one for the standard comand system (cockpit management and data). This includes the gps navigation system and tele aid, which is basically a cellular help line for specific problem situations. For 2002, tele aid includes traffic reports and concierge services. Then there's the optional infoservices, which provides web-based customized information including news, stock quotes, sports and weather.  reduce driving stress? The sheer mass of the manuals is stress-inducing. Maybe that's where the voice command feature comes in. A fingertip maybe, then the pneumatic door and trunk closing assist does the rest. But there's no blind spot through the windshield, not even in the spray of a truck in the rain, thanks to powerful wipers with no less than six nozzles to spray washer fluid.  naturally, the bose sound system is state of the art. More things that can be optimized, more programmable features. Soundstage positioning, it's called. Don't they have engineers for that, at concerts?. driving impressionthe s500, like other luxury mercedes, is in its element on the autobahn. If all that was ever asked of the car were to drive on smooth, straight roads at 120 mph, it would be unbeatable, great value for 85 grand. Set the cruise control by using big digital numbers displayed on the speedometer screen, then sit back and relax. On the highway, the car is lowered by about an inch, which improves aerodynamics and thus fuel mileage. This is not the same as the more complex active suspension, which is optional on the s500 (standard on the s600 and s55 amg), and which virtually eliminates body roll in cornering, squat under acceleration, and dive during braking.  we must say we were surprised that the suspension wasn't perfect. It rocked over shallow holes in the road at 10 mph, and we could feel it lift from side to side over rough or grooved surfaces, at the speed limit. The airmatic suspension with adaptive damping has three settable positions for shock stiffnes.
